New Providence is located along the Passaic River on the northwestern edge of Union County, New Jersey. This borough encompasses most of the Murray Hill neighborhood, with 9% of the area dedicated to public and protected parkland. Because of this, homeowners enjoy a wide variety of green spaces, pocket parks, and playgrounds. 

Moreover, New Providence is only 28 miles away from New York. Trains passing through two NJ Transit train stations in the area lead to Hoboken Terminal and to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, giving residents an easy commute experience from the borough to the city. Several weekday buses also pass through or near the town. Meanwhile, roads from New Providence easily lead to the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, and I-78. 

Award-winning schools

The New Providence School District is one of the most highly rated school districts in New Jersey. It comprises four schools and serves around 2,500 students from pre-kindergarten to the twelfth grade. Some of its schools have, at one point, received the National Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence.

New Providence is also home to The Academy of Our Lady of Peace, a private school that serves students from Pre-K to Grade 8 and operates under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. It has also been recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program as an Exemplary High Performing School in 2017.

Unique shopping and dining options

While New Providence is mostly residential, a quaint downtown center provides residents with an eclectic selection of boutiques, locally-owned coffee shops, and chic dining establishments like Moe’s Bistro & Bar and Providence Bar & Kitchen

Downtown New Providence is also home to the historic Barth’s Market, an artisanal butcher shop that has been around since 1960. It also has a station where you can create your own sandwich, poke bowl, or salad.

History buffs can visit The Salt Box Museum, formerly known as the Garrison/Dickinson/Genung House. It now houses various memorabilia from various points in American history. 

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Watchung Reservation is only a short drive away from town. With over 2,000 acres of untouched, natural landscapes, anyone can hike, ride, or simply stroll along the trails around Lake Surprise, Blue Brook, and the historic abandoned village of Feltville.
