Home design trends in 2022 that you need to know about

Home design trends in 2022

Spruce up your home with these 2022 interior design trends:

  1. Multipurpose living spaces

When the pandemic struck in 2020 and lockdown orders forced people to stay home, we wanted to feel safe but productive in our spaces. We wore many hats, working from home while homeschooling the kids, caring for sick loved ones, and isolating when necessary.

Because of this, our living spaces have had to serve more than one purpose. The living room, once a place for receiving visitors, has had to double as a nursery; the kitchen became a place to cook, eat, answer emails, and attend Zoom meetings.

With the pandemic far from over, our living spaces must continue to serve multiple purposes. We will continue to make the most of our space, using it for rest, work, relaxation, education, and entertainment.

  2. Convertible Furniture

With the home becoming increasingly multi-functional, interior design pieces will have more than one purpose. Convertible furniture is versatile and easy to put away when not currently in use. This helps homeowners make the most of their pieces while maximizing available space.
Examples of convertible furniture include coffee tables that can be used as dining tables or work desks, or sofas that can be converted into full-sized beds.

  3. Curved lines and rounded furniture

Interior designers anticipate a departure from the clean, sharp, and modern lines of recent years, and a trend towards rounded and voluptuous shapes in furniture and decor. Round edges add softness to the space and make it feel more comfortable. Curved lines also have a soothing and calming effect compared to angular lines, which create dynamism and excitement.

When adding curved furniture and decor to the home, designers advise against overwhelming the space with too many curved or rounded elements. It is generally advisable to keep a few straight or clean lines in the decor for visual balance.

  4. Natural materials

Natural materials have been on-trend for the past several years with the advent of eco chic decor and they will continue to be in vogue in 2022. Natural materials like wood, cotton, and linen add warmth and coziness to the home.

In an age of Zoom meetings and Netflix binges, incorporating natural materials help offset the amount of screen time and over reliance on technology. Organic materials like rattan, jute, and sisal can help us find balance in a hyper-connected society.

With the emergence of new variants upending travel plans, the use of natural materials in decor reminds us of our favorite coastal getaways and camping spots. It creates a feeling of being outdoors or having traveled while enjoying the comforts of home.

  5. Extreme minimalism

Although minimalism has been on-trend for over a decade, extreme minimalism will dominate 2022 interior design trends. Extreme minimalism is borne out of the need to free up space for day-to-day activities now that homes are expected to be multifunctional. Decluttering and paring down one’s belongings to the bare essentials create more space and freedom of movement. It also helps households become more organized and productive.
