Family-friendly activities for fall in New Jersey

friendly activities

This fall, there are places to explore, views to enjoy, and things to do when the air is crisp and leaves turn orange, deep crimson, and amber in the Garden State.

Here are several NJ fall events and other family-friendly activities to look forward to.

Take a hike

Flex those muscles, commune with nature, and inhale the cool autumn air in New Jersey’s best fall foliage trails. Trees wearing the brightest of colors are sure to cheer you and your family up along the way.

See animals up close

Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley is the place to go for all things sheep, from sheep by-products to the actual animals. But if alpacas are your thing then there’s Hidden Brook Ranch in Blairstown where you can go pumpkin painting and alpaca loving at the same time this fall. Cape May County Park & Zoo, meanwhile, has its annual Boo at the Zoo! Halloween event where children of all ages can come in their best costumes.

Camp out

What better way to see the colors of the season than by camping out? In New Jersey, there are many RV resorts and campsites to choose from. Check out Four Seasons Family Campground in Pilesgrove and Ocean View Resort Campground in Ocean View for both water and land-based activities that every member of the family can enjoy.

Watch birds fly south

As the temperature drops in New Jersey during the fall season, birds head for the warmer climate of the south. The migration of these feathered creatures is a lovely sight to see, and one of the great vantage points for witnessing this beautiful phenomenon is at Cape May Point State Park. The tallest landmark here is their lighthouse which provides those who dare climb its 199 steps to the top with a breathtaking view of the Cape May peninsula.

Join the Great Pumpkin Festival

Heaven Hill Farm in Vernon Township comes alive in the fall as its entire calendar is filled with exciting things to do. Every member of the family will enjoy the mazes, arcade games, carnival rides, paintball, pig races, apple canons, hayrides – and pumpkin picking, of course. This annual fair starts around mid-September all the way to the first days of November so get your tickets online for a family day you won’t forget!

Get lost in corn mazes and escape rooms

Flex your problem-solving skills in farm corn mazes – from themed ones to kid-friendly versions – where hayrides and pumpkin picking abound. For some corn maze fun, go to R and J Farm in Galloway Township then pick some pumpkins to use for Halloween food and decor in Springdale Farms and Conklin Farm U-Pick.

Meanwhile, you can unlock your sleuthing skills in NJ’s escape rooms like Amazing Escape Room in Greenbrook and the East Coast Escape Room in Toms River.
